Maika Monroe, Rosa Salazar, Zendaya and Bella Thorne testing for Alita: Battle Angel

April 27, 2016 by Gary Collinson

With a director in place in Robert Rodriguez, it looks like casting is underway on James Cameron’s manga adaptation Alita: Battle Angel, with The Hollywood Reporter revealing that a number of actresses are testing for the female lead.

According to the site, Maika Monroe (It Follows), Rosa Salazar (Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials), Zendaya (Spider-Man: Homecoming) and Bella Thorne (The Duff) have all tested for the lead role of Alita, an amnesiac cyborg who is found in a junkyard by a cybermedic expert and becomes a bounty hunter, tracking down criminals.

The report suggests that Zendaya could be the frontrunner for the role, although she may have scheduling conflicts with her Disney Channel show K.C. Undercover.

As yet, the adaptation is yet to officially receive the green light, with 20th Century Fox said to be looking to bring the budget down from the $175 – $200 million range.
