Edge of Tomorrow hits $100M at the US box office… at last!

September 2, 2014 by Gary Collinson

Hidden away under the headlines this week for Guardians of the Galaxy becoming the #1 film of the year and yet another superhero movie dominating the ticket sales was a small triumph for all those Edge of Tomorrow fans out there (although there were not as many as I hoped from by the very nature of this article); it finally broke the magical $100 million mark at the US box office.

Yes, it’s taken nearly 90 days compared to the three days such remarkable trash like the new Transformers offering took to reach the same amount but, damn it, it’s part of the $100 million club at last. Sure, I’d have hoped for $100 million to have been reached after two weeks and the total amount to stand around $200 by now, but that failure lays squarely at the feet of the Warner Bros. marketing team, and not Tom Cruise, Doug Liman, Christopher McQuarrie and company.

With a worldwide taking of $365 million, Edge of Tomorrow can be proud to stand in the current 12th position of 2014 releases considering every film above it is either a sequel, comic book adaptation, or based on a well-established brand or property. It also marks the 17th film in Tom Cruise’s illustrious career to pass $100 million in the US alone – quite a feat I’m sure you’ll agree.

So it’s a big congratulations from me to all those involved in the film, I just wish more people had seen it and given it the success it deserved.
