New Ant-Man synopsis turns Scott Lang from con-man to master thief

November 5, 2014 by James Garcia

A new synopsis for Marvel’s Ant-Man seemingly changes one of the core aspects of Scott Lang (Paul Rudd)’s character, though how much of an effect it will actually have on the film remains to be seen. In the comics, Scott Lang is a street-level crook and con-man who steals Hank Pym’s Ant-Man tech and eventually takes on the heroic mantle himself. This time, however, he’s not a con-man at all, and actually a “master thief.” Check out the new synopsis here:

The next evolution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe brings a founding member of The Avengers to the big screen for the first time Marvel Studios’ Ant-Man. Armed with the astonishing ability to shrink in scale but increase in strength, master thief Scott Lang must embrace his inner-hero and help his mentor, Dr. Hank Pym, protect the secret behind his spectacular Ant-Man suit from a new generation of towering threats. Against seemingly insurmountable obstacles, Pym and Lang must plan and pull off a heist that will save the world.

This could just be a minor semantics change, or it could be one of the script changes that Adam McKay and Rudd himself implemented once Edgar Wright left the project.

Until we find out for sure, let us know your thoughts about this little career change in the comments. Does Scott Lang have to be a con-man for the story to work as effectively as it does in the comics? Or is “master thief” Scott Lang good enough?

Directed by Peyton Reed, Ant-Man hits theaters on July 17th, 2015.
