Edgar Wright on exiting Marvel’s Ant-Man

June 23, 2017 by Robert Kojder

It had seemed that writer/director Edgar Wright had caught a huge break back in 2006 when he was given the opportunity to helm Marvel’s Ant-Man, but apparently, it just wasn’t meant to be. Almost a decade later he left the project over creative differences while Peyton Reed went on to make the superhero blockbuster, which was well-received both critically and commercially.

While promoting his upcoming sonically-charged heist action film Baby Driver, Wright was asked to clarify the creative differences that made him leave Ant-Man. Speaking to Variety, the filmmaker explained:

“The most diplomatic answer is I wanted to make a Marvel movie but I don’t think they really wanted to make an Edgar Wright movie. I was the writer-director on it and then they wanted to do a draft without me, and having written all my other movies, that’s a tough thing to move forward. Suddenly becoming a director for hire on it, you’re sort of less emotionally invested and you start to wonder why you’re there, really.”

The good news is that the success of Edgar Wright’s filmmaking career has not slowed down one bit, as he seems to have another smashing success with Baby Driver [read our review here]. Still, I suppose we will always wonder what an Edgar Wright directed Ant-Man would have been like…
