Exclusive: The Tick creator Ben Edlund on why there’s no better time for the show to exist

October 20, 2017 by Justin Cook

Justin Cook sat down with the executive producers and cast of The Tick at New York Comic Con. The following is an excerpt from his interview with comic book/series creator Ben Edlund…

Through the many forms that The Tick has taken throughout the years, one man has always stood confidently by its side — creator Ben Edlund, who developed the titular character at the age of 18. Edlund and the cast and executive producers of Amazon Prime Video’s The Tick, which debuted this past August (after a pilot release in 2016), brought the comedy series to New York Comic Con, the annual meeting place for superhero and comic book lovers on the East Coast, and barely all fit on the stage for a lively panel in front of fans of the show.

Afterwards, Edlund talked to Flickering Myth about The Tick and how with the abundance of big and small screen efforts from Marvel Studios, Warner Bros, Fox and more in recent years, there’s no better time for the show, a send-up of superhero properties, to exist.

On the current superhero climate and how it has changed over the years, the creator said, “I can’t imagine… how could there be more [superhero movies]? The level of superhero fluency that this culture has been forced to absorb, it just puts us in this great position where even if you’ve only seen superhero advertisements for products that have decided superheroes should be their mascots, you’ve learned more than you could probably pick up passively 15 years ago. We’re just soaking in it. So it’s a great time for that.”

In a world where superheroes have been real for decades, an underdog accountant with zero powers comes to realize his city is owned by a global super villain long-thought dead. As he struggles to uncover this conspiracy, he falls in league with a strange blue superhero.

While the first six episodes of The Tick are currently available to stream on Amazon, season 1’s latter six will hit the streaming platform on February 23th, 2018; check out the trailer for part 2 by clicking here. The Tick stars Peter Serafinowicz, Griffin Newman, Valorie Curry, Brendan Hines, Yara Martinez, Scott Speiser, Jackie Earle Haley and Michael Cerveris.
