Comic Book Review – Newbury & Hobbes: The Undying #1

September 13, 2018 by Calum Petrie

Calum Petrie reviews Newbury & Hobbes: The Undying…

Straight off the bat I will say, I am new to this pretty well versed world of Newbury & Hobbes; I found myself worried I was going to be missing a hell of a lot of back story. When the issue started and I was greeted with lovely artwork and a steampunk setting of Victorian London, I felt a little better about this endeavour as a whole.

Newbury & Hobbes: The Undying is the latest adventures of the two title characters, who work for Her Majesty’s Secret Service, solving crimes and conducting investigations into the strange, weird and macabre.

This was a surprisingly easy issue to delve into with its art style similar to a 90’s Saturday morning cartoon show, complete with eccentric characters and weird and wonderful story. The journey takes the duo from brawls in the street to an autopsy of an unknown creature before winding up in the lab of a mad scientist. You are in for one hell of a ride in this short issue.

There are some cliches, but this does very little to take away from the overarching story, and the steampunk setting goes hand in hand with the tale. These elements combined make for an in-depth story and even more compelling characters.

The issue ends with a proper cliff hanger, which would certainly have left me invested if I had not already converted by that point. A very enjoyable read, and I’m anticipating the next issue’s release.

Rating – 7/10
