Tom Hanks and Paul Greengrass to reunite for News of the World

February 8, 2019 by Gary Collinson

THR is reporting that Tom Hanks is set to reunite with his Captain Phillips director Paul Greengrass on News of the World, an adaptation of the Paulette Jiles novel, which is set up at Fox 2000.

Set in the aftermath of the American Civil War, News of the World follows a widowed news reader who travels through Texas announcing the news of the times. He is hired to deliver a young orphan girl, whose parents were killed by a Native American tribe, to her family in San Antonio. The two develop a bond during the 400 mile trip, which is tested when the man realises that her relative have abusive plans for her.

In addition to starring, Hanks will also produce the film alongside Gary Goetzman of Playtone and Gail Mutrux of Pretty Pictures, while the project has been scripted by Luke Davies (Lion).

Two time Oscar-winner Hanks will next be seen on screen as Fred Rogers in the biopic A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, and also returns as the voice of Woody in Disney-Pixar’s Toy Story 4. He has has the World War II drama Greyhound set to arrive in 2020, and is gearing up to begin production on the sci-fi feature BIOS.
