Michael Rosenbaum rejects Lex Luthor return in Crisis on Infinite Earths

September 24, 2019 by Ricky Church

After last week’s exciting announcements that Tom Welling and Erica Durance would be reprising their Smallville roles of Clark Kent and Lois Lane in The CW’s Arrowverse crossover Crisis on Infinite Earths, many fans hoped to get more of a Smallville reunion with Michael Rosenbaum returning as Lex Luthor. Sadly, however, Rosenbaum will not be appearing in the anticipated event.

The actor revealed on his Twitter account that he was offered a role in the crossover, but he ultimately passed on the opportunity. The problem, it seems, came from a lack of information regarding the size of the role and when he would be needed to shoot his scenes as well as family commitments.

Rosenbaum portrayed Lex Luthor for seven of Smallville‘s ten seasons, returning in the series finale in a guest role. His portrayal of Lex is considered a fan-favourite as he depicted Lex’s slow slide from Clark’s best friend to his mortal enemy. Though the size of Welling’s role in Crisis on Infinite Earths is unknown, it has been confirmed that Durance will be portraying Lois in multiple episodes of the crossover.

Though Rosenbaum will not be in the crossover, Jon Cryer is set to reprise his Lex Luthor role from Supergirl in Crisis on Infinite Earths. Audiences will also see Tyler Hoechlin and Elizabeth Tulloch returning as Supergirl’s Superman and Lois while Brandon Routh will also be portraying Superman for the first time since 2006’s Superman Returns.

Crisis on Infinite Earths will begin with Supergirl on Sunday, December 8, followed by Batwoman on Monday, December 9 and The Flash on Tuesday, December 10. After that it will go on a winter hiatus, returning with Arrow on Tuesday, January 14 and will conclude with DC’s Legends of Tomorrow airing immediately after Arrow.
