J.J. Abrams says marketing for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker deliberately hasn’t been as secretive

November 28, 2019 by Samuel Brace

J.J. Abrams, the director of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, doesn’t think the film’s marketing has been particularly secretive this time around.

There are always plenty of questions and mysteries going into a new Star Wars film and this is how fans like it. And while we know next to nothing about the actual plot of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, director J.J. Abrams thinks the marketing hasn’t been very secretive.

Speaking to Uproxx, the director explained that his usual secretive nature hasn’t been in play as much as usual, as we already know the likes of Palpatine will be returning:

“I feel very confident about what the movie is. And I feel like we’ve found a way to do something that doesn’t need — and I don’t feel the need — to do smoke and mirrors at all on this. I feel we have a story that’s pretty huge in scope. While I don’t want to tell the whole movie to people and ruin it and I don’t want to spoil things, I feel like we need to be able to have a conversation about how, yes, Carrie Fisher appears in this movie. And I’m happy to talk about how we did it, in so much as, people know, it’s really her. We didn’t do a digital Carrie. Yes, Palpatine is in this movie. I don’t want to talk about what that is and how.”

It certainly seems like a sensible approach as while we do know some surprising details about the movie, the details are yet to be explained. But who knows, perhaps Abrams has a few more shocks up his sleeve.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is set for release on December 19th 2019 in the UK and December 20th 2019 in North America. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker sees J.J. Abrams (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) directing a cast that includes Star Wars veterans Daisy Ridley (Rey), Adam Driver (Kylo Ren), John Boyega (Finn), Oscar Isaac (Poe Dameron), Lupita Nyong’o (Maz Kanata), Domhnall Gleeson (General Hux), Kelly Marie Tran (Rose Tico), Joonas Suotamo (Chewbacca), Billie Lourd (Lieutenant Connix), Greg Grunberg (Snap Wexley), Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker), Anthony Daniels (C-3PO), Billy Dee Williams (Lando Calrissian) and Carrie Fisher (Leia Organa) as well as new additions Naomi Ackie (Lady Macbeth), Richard E. Grant (Logan), Dominic Monaghan (Lost), and Keri Russell (The Americans).
