Quentin Tarantino is “steering away” from his planned Star Trek movie

December 19, 2019 by Gary Collinson

Quentin Tarantino has frequently suggested that he’ll be calling time on his career as a director after ten movies, which means that – following the release of this year’s Once Upon a Time… In Hollywood – we’re down to one more feature from the acclaimed filmmaker.

And, if his latest comments are any indication, it seems we may be able to rule out his Star Trek movie, with Tarantino telling Consequence of Sound that he’s “steering away” from the project, as he believes he’ll now be going out with something of a smaller scale.

“I think I’m steering away from Star Trek, but I haven’t had an official conversation with those guys yet,” said Tarantino. “In a strange way, it seems like Hollywood would be my last. So, I’ve kind of taken the pressure off myself to make that last big voila kind of statement… I mean, I have no idea what the story of the next one’s going to be. I don’t even have a clue.”

Tarantino’s interest in an R-rated Star Trek – which he’s previously described as “Pulp Fiction in space” – was first revealed back in December 2017, and features the Kelvin Timeline crew (i.e. Chris Pine and company), with Mark L. Smith (The Revenant) writing the script.

Paramount Pictures has recently announced that Noah Hawley (Lucy in the Sky) has signed on to direct Star Trek 4, so presumably the studio would be in no hurry to move ahead with Tarantino’s project – although one has to assume it would jump at the chance to do so should Tarantino commit. And of course, even if he passes on the director’s chair, it’s possible that Paramount could move ahead anyway, with Tarantino acting in a producing capacity.

Along with Star Trek, Tarantino has also recently revealed that he’s still open to the possibility of reuniting with Uma Thurman for the long-rumoured Kill Bill Vol. 3, stating just this month that it is “definitely in the cards”. Could that be his final film, or would you prefer that he cooked up something original for his swansong? Let us know in the comments, or on our social channels @FlickeringMyth…
