Sony and Netflix developing Matilda musical movie

February 1, 2020 by Gary Collinson

Netflix is teaming with Sony Pictures to produce a feature film adaptation of Matilda: The Musical, the stage version of Roald Dahl’s beloved 1988 children’s novel.

As revealed by THR, the film will be directed by Matthew Warchus, the director of the stage musical, whose previous film credits include 1999’s Simpatico and 2014’s Pride.

Matilda follows a highly intelligent young girl with the gift of telekinesis who finds a kindred spirit in her teacher, Miss Honey, at a school run by the abusive headmistress Miss Trunchbull.

Sony’s TriStar Pictures previously adapted the book into the 1996 movie Matilda starring Danny DeVito, Mara Wilson, Embeth Davidtz and Pam Ferris. Despite critical acclaim, the film tanked at the box office grossing just $33 million.
