WarnerMedia CEO says “we won’t be developing David Ayer’s cut” of Suicide Squad

March 23, 2021 by Amie Cranswick

No sooner had WarnerMedia and HBO Max announced that they were allowing Zack Snyder to complete the Snyder Cut of Justice League than a section of the DC fanbase began calling for similar treatment for David Ayer and his 2016 supervillain team-up Suicide Squad.

Ayer, who had reshoots and changes enforced on him by the studio, was himself quick to get behind the #ReleaseTheAyerCut movement, calling his original cut “fucking amazing” and stating that he would find it “incredibly cathartic” if WB was to release his version of the film.

However, after shutting down any hope of the SnyderVerse continuing post-Zack Snyder’s Justice League, WarnerMedia CEO Ann Sarnoff has confirmed to Variety that “We won’t be developing David Ayer’s cut”, prompting the director to issue the following response on social media:

Unlike The Snyder Cut, which cost around $70 million to complete, Ayer’s cut of Suicide Squad is already believed to exist in a finished state, and so it’s perhaps understandable why the director is questioning what appears to be a definitive “no” from WarnerMedia. However, WB also has The Suicide Squad incoming this year, with Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn essentially rebooting the franchise, so it seems the focus here is firmly on the future – for the time being, at least.
