The Batman HBO Max spin-off The Penguin officially ordered

March 10, 2022 by Ricky Church

The world of The Batman is already expanding as HBO Max has officially ordered The Penguin, a limited series which will see Colin Farrell reprise his role as Gotham’s gangster Oswald Cobblepot, a.k.a. The Penguin. Spoilers for The Batman follow…

The Penguin will follow Cobblepot “as he rises through the ranks of Gotham’s criminal underworld.” There is no word whether this series will be a prequel to The Batman and reveal how he became Carmine Falcone’s right-hand man or if it will take place after the events of the film where Falcone’s death and the flooding of Gotham City leaves both a power vacuum and ample opportunity for Penguin to carve out his own empire as Batman fears.

Lauren LeFranc (Impulse) will write and showrun The Penguin while The Batman director Matt Reeves will executive produce alongside Dylan Clark. Reeves’ 6th and Idaho Productions will produce with Daniel Pipski as executive producer and Clark through his company Dylan Clark Productions.

This news of The Penguin comes off the announcement Reeves’ other spin-off based around the Gotham City Police has now evolved into one about Arkham Asylum, the infamous prison for many of Batman’s deadliest enemies which was briefly glimpsed in the film.

“The world that Matt Reeves created for The Batman is one that warrants a deeper gaze through the eyes of Oswald Cobblepot,” said Farrell. “I couldn’t be more excited about continuing this exploration of Oz as he rises through the darkened ranks to become The Penguin. Will be good to get him back on the streets of Gotham for a little madness and a little mayhem.”

“Colin exploded off the screen as the Penguin in The Batman, and having the chance to thoroughly explore the inner life of that character on HBO Max is an absolute thrill. Dylan and I are so excited to work with Lauren in continuing Oz’s story as he grabs violently for power in Gotham,” Reeves said.

“I have long been a fan of the world of The Batman, and Matt’s film is such a powerful and bold entry into the canon,” LeFranc said. “I am excited and humbled to continue telling stories in the grimy world of Gotham City – and what better excuse to channel my inner villain than to tell the story of Oswald Cobblepot? I am thrilled to work with Colin, Matt, Dylan, 6th & Idaho, Warners, and HBO Max as we work to bring this story to the screen.”

“We are thrilled to bring audiences a new version of this iconic DC character that they have never seen before,” said Sarah Aubrey, HBO Max’s Head of Original Content. “It is incredible to be working with Matt, Dylan and Lauren on continuing this story and to see Colin take his already exceptional performance in ‘The Batman’ to the next level.”

Two years of stalking the streets as the Batman (Robert Pattinson), striking fear into the hearts of criminals, has led Bruce Wayne deep into the shadows of Gotham City. With only a few trusted allies—Alfred Pennyworth (Andy Serkis), Lt. James Gordon (Jeffrey Wright)—amongst the city’s corrupt network of officials and high-profile figures, the lone vigilante has established himself as the sole embodiment of vengeance amongst his fellow citizens.

When a killer targets Gotham’s elite with a series of sadistic machinations, a trail of cryptic clues sends the World’s Greatest Detective on an investigation into the underworld, where he encounters such characters as Selina Kyle/aka Catwoman (Zoë Kravitz), Oswald Cobblepot/aka the Penguin (Colin Farrell), Carmine Falcone (John Turturro), and Edward Nashton/aka the Riddler (Paul Dano). As the evidence begins to lead closer to home and the scale of the perpetrator’s plans becomes clear, Batman must forge new relationships, unmask the culprit, and bring justice to the abuse of power and corruption that has long plagued Gotham City.

The Batman sees Robert Pattinson (The Lighthouse) donning the cape and cowl as Bruce Wayne/Batman alongside Zoe Kravitz (Big Little Lies) as Selina Kyle/Catwoman, Colin Farrell (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them) as Oswald Cobblepot/The Penguin, Paul Dano (Escape at Dannemora) as Edward Nashton/The Riddler, Jeffrey Wright (Westworld) as Jim Gordon, Andy Serkis (War for the Planet of the Apes) as Alfred Pennyworth, John Turturro (The Big Lebowski) as Carmine Falcone, Alex Ferns (Chernobyl) as Commissioner Pete Savage, Con O’Neill (Ordinary Lies) as Chief Mackenzie Bock, Peter Sarsgaard (The Killing) as Gotham D.A. Gil Colson and Jayme Lawson (Farewell Amor) as Bella Real.
