Jurnee Smollett’s Black Canary movie is still happening

June 1, 2022 by Matt Rodgers

Following Warner Bros.’ recent merger with Discovery, you could be forgiven for thinking that the previously announced Black Canary solo movie for HBO Max might have gone the way of other high-profile DCEU cancellation Wonder Twins. Fear not Birds of Prey fans, because it appears that Jurnee Smollett and writer Misha Green are still busy at work on the spin-off series.

Despite underperforming at the box-office ($200 million worldwide), there was a lot to love about Cathy Yan’s Birds of Prey, not least the performance of Jurnee Smollett as Black Canary, the club singer with martial arts skills and an ear-piercing ‘Canary Cry.’

It was announced last year that the character would be returning as part of a series of HBO Originals to debut on Warner Bros. streaming service that included Batgirl and Blue Beetle. While those two are now deep into production, with Blue Beetle being given a theatrical release, we hadn’t heard a peep, let alone a scream about Black Canary, until now.

During a New York Times profile of the actress, which discusses everything from Lovecraft Country to the forthcoming Netflix blockbuster Spiderhead, it is mentioned that Smollet is “preparing to reprise her role as Black Canary“. The publication also briefly spoke to series writer Misha Green who revealed that “Jurnee shows up on the day, and she has thought about 900 different ways to approach her character”.

Admittedly they are just snippets, but it seems as though Black Canary is still very much preparing to sing, it’s just a case of whether or not Warner Bros. hand her the mic. Let us know whether you want them to by heading to our social channels @FlickeringMyth….
