As awards season begins to heat up, the nominations for the 2023 Film Independent Spirit Awards have been announced, with Daniels’ Everything Everywhere All At Once leading the pack with eight nominations in total including Best Feature, Best Director and Best Lead Performance (Michelle Yeoh).
The Best Feature award sees the A24 title nominated alongside Bones and All, Our Father the Devil, Tar and Women Talking, while Daniels – a.k.a. Danile Kwan and Daniel Scheinert – are up for Best Director alongside Todd Field (Tar), Kogonada (After Yang), Sarah Polley (Women Talking) and Halina Reign (Bodies Bodies Bodies).
Outside of the nominated films, the biggest surprise perhaps was the complete shutout of Darren Aronofsky and Brendan Fraser’s The Whale, which has been generating plenty of Oscar buzz on the festival circuit.
