Black Adam budget skyrocketed after $70 million reshoots

December 24, 2022 by EJ Moreno

Black Adam, starring Dwayne Johnson, is joining the ranks of some of the most expensive movies of all time. Sadly, the film won’t be as successful as entries like Avengers: Endgame or even the newly released Avatar: The Way of Water.

In a new report from The Hollywood Reporter, the DCEU production saw its budget hit astronomical heights. It was initially reported that the budget was around $190 million, but the film ultimately ran much higher.

While the film’s original budget was set at $190 million by the studio, a twenty-day round of reshoots ballooned the budget to $260 million, the third highest for a DC movie behind Justice League ($300 million) and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice ($263 million).

The reshoots came after what was reported as “a poor test screening.” With the reported budget and the film’s intense marketing campaign, the film will likely not turn a profit as the film is sitting at only $391 million worldwide at the time of writing and is already streaming on HBO Max.

This news comes not too far from Dwayne Johnson coming forward and saying that any sequel plans for Black Adam have been halted as the character will not be part of DC Studios’ immediate future. The actor did note that he is open to reprising the role in a future DC film and has already met with DC Studios’ James Gunn.

Gunn and his co-chair Peter Safran are in the midst of reinventing the entire DC Film slate. The duo will reportedly work through the holidays and begin to shape the next ten years of DCU movies with President and CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery David Zaslav.

Nearly 5,000 years after he was bestowed with the almighty powers of the ancient gods—and imprisoned just as quickly—Black Adam (Johnson) is freed from his earthly tomb, ready to unleash his unique form of justice on the modern world.

Black Adam is directed by Jaume Collet-Serra (Jungle Cruise) and sees Dwayne Johnson starring alongside Noah Centineo as Atom Smasher, Aldis Hodge as Hawkman, Quintessa Swindell as Cyclone, Pierce Brosnan as Doctor Fate, Sarah Shahi as Adrianna, Marwan Kenzari as Ishmael, Bodhi Sabongui as Amon, Viola Davis as Amanda Waller and Henry Cavill as Superman.
