Dwayne Johnson shoots down reports that Black Adam will lose money

December 7, 2022 by Gary Collinson

We were promised that the hierarchy of power in the DC universe was about to change in October, and that certainly proved to be the case – although the appointment of James Gunn and Peter Safran as the new heads of DC Studios wasn’t quite what The Rock was referring to during his five-year-plus promotional push for Black Adam.

With the DC Comics adaptation’s theatrical run winding down as the movie begins to hit digital and home entertainment platforms, reports have been circulating in the trades this week that Black Adam needed to gross around $600 million to break even, and with just $387 million in the bank from the film’s theatrical run so far, is looking at a loss in the region of $100 million.

Well, not so according to Dwayne Johnson, who has taken to social media with some Hollywood accounting to spin Black Adam as a hit with a profit of around $52 million to $72 million – although it’s worth noting that the figures in the article The Rock links to include $86 million of “domestic home entertainment and streaming” revenue, including “the fee that Warner Bros pays itself to send the pic to HBO Max”.

Waited to confirm with financiers before I shared this excellent #BlackAdam news – our film will PROFIT between $52M-$72M.
Fact.
At almost $400M worldwide we are building our new franchise step by step (first Captain America did $370M) for the DC future.https://t.co/GBIgsbtnkq

What do you make of Black Adam’s box office performance? Do you think the bigwigs at Warner Bros. and DC Studios will be as happy with the accounts as The Rock? Let us know your thoughts on our social channels @FlickeringMyth…

Nearly 5,000 years after he was bestowed with the almighty powers of the ancient gods—and imprisoned just as quickly—Black Adam (Johnson) is freed from his earthly tomb, ready to unleash his unique form of justice on the modern world.

Black Adam is directed by Jaume Collet-Serra (Jungle Cruise) and sees Dwayne Johnson starring alongside Noah Centineo as Atom Smasher, Aldis Hodge as Hawkman, Quintessa Swindell as Cyclone, Pierce Brosnan as Doctor Fate, Sarah Shahi as Adrianna, Marwan Kenzari as Ishmael, Bodhi Sabongui as Amon, Viola Davis as Amanda Waller and Henry Cavill as Superman.
