In the Summer of 2022, John Williams set out to wrap up his historic career. After decades and decades of fantastic film scores, Williams was reportedly done.
He wrapped on Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, set to serve as his swan song. But things have changed recently, with the legendary film score composer not done yet. The 91-year-old John Williams says any retirement talk is done for now, telling The Times that he’s not stopping yet.
Williams says, “I don’t care much for grand pronunciamentos, statements that are firm and finished and surrounded by closed doors. If I made one without putting it in context, then I withdraw it. If a film came along that I was greatly interested in, with a schedule that I could cope with, then I wouldn’t want to rule anything out. Everything is possible. All is before us. Only our limitations are holding us back. Or, to put it more simply: I like to keep an open mind.”
This goes back to an earlier statement from the composer when he said a year ago,” “I’ll stick around for a while. I can’t retire from music. A day without music is a mistake.” Longtime friend and collaborator Spielberg happily responded: “I just found out he’s not retiring.”
Williams will be conducting orchestras in London, Vienna and Berlin. At the time of writing, there’s no word on what films we’ll see Williams compose, but rumors have swirled he’ll be part of the Rey Skywalker/Star Wars movie.
