Amazon MGM’s live-action Voltron movie finds its lead

October 6, 2024 by EJ Moreno

Just like the 80s, Voltron is here. Rawson Marshall Thurber, the filmmaker behind the Netflix hit Red Notice, is directing Amazon MGM’s big-budget live-action feature based on the mecha anime, and now we’ve also learned that one of the actors attached to this new Voltron is newcomer Daniel Quinn-Toye, who has landed the starring role in the film.

Voltron is based on the Japanese sci-fi series Beast King GoLion and Kikou Kantai Dairugger XV. World Events edited and dubbed the series a syndicated show, Voltron: Defender of the Universe, which originally debuted in the 1980s.

Voltron revolves around a team of five pilots who control giant robotic Lions that can combine to form a massive warrior known as Voltron. The basic premise involves the pilots, often called the “Voltron Force,” fighting against evil forces, particularly the villainous King Zarkon and his minions, to protect the universe, especially the planet Arus. Each lion has unique abilities, and when combined, they create a powerful defender capable of taking on formidable foes.

Little is known about the plot for this new adaptation, but the film will shoot this fall in Australia.
