As Avatar 2 dominates the box office, James Cameron laments the stories he didn’t get to make

December 31, 2022 by Matt Rodgers

With Avatar: The Way of Water cruising past the $1.1 billion dollar mark like a giant Tulkun, director James Cameron has spoken about the flipside to the success of his decades in the making franchise, and what the all-consuming trips to Pandora have meant for other stories he would have liked to tell.

Speaking with Empire Magazine during their director Q&A, Cameron was asked about whether he felt bad about the stories he’d not been able to tell as he put 25 years of his career into Avatar. The Academy-Award winning director replied that “the world of Avatar is so sprawling that I can tell most of the stories I want to tell within it and try many of the stylistic techniques that I hope to explore.”

“Our time as artists is finite,” he adds. “I will always mourn some of the stories that I don’t get to make. But I feel a great satisfaction when other directors want to explore some of my ideas, like Kathryn Bigelow did with Strange Days, and Robert Rodriguez did when I passed him the baton on Alita: Battle Angel. I look forward to more collaborations in the future with directors I admire.”

Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, “Avatar: The Way of Water” begins to tell the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri, and their kids), the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they endure.

Avatar: The Way of Water is directed by James Cameron and sees Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Matt Gerald, Dileep Rao, Stephen Lang, Giovanni Ribisi, and Sigourney Weaver all reprising their roles from the 2009 blockbuster, while new additions to the cast include Kate Winslet, Oona Chaplin, Cliff Curtis, Britain Dalton, Filip Geljo, Jamie Flatters, Bailey Bass, Trinity Bliss, Jack Champion, Duane Evans Jr., Edie Falco, Brendan Cowell, Michelle Yeoh, Jemaine Clement, Keston John, and CJ Jones.

Avatar: The Way of Water is currently playing on almost every single cinema screen worldwide.
