Ben Affleck rewrote the Batman v Superman script while in his Batman costume

February 26, 2016 by Justin Cook

As evidenced by the rumors that he will both write and direct a DC Extended Universe Batman solo film, Ben Affleck is more than just an actor. In fact, although he rose to fame because of his numerous film roles, he has never been nominated for an Oscar in an acting category, but instead has won two for writing Good Will Hunting and producing Argo, the latter of which he also directed. So, when Zack Snyder and the Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice crew brought in Affleck to play the Caped Crusader, they must have known that he would also try to get involved behind the scenes, in addition to in front of the camera.

According to US Weekly, Affleck worked on cleaning up the original Dawn of Justice screenplay. An insider told the site that he “would go into wardrobe and get all suited up for the day in his Batman suit” and then he “would sit around reworking the script.” Apparently, he “wasn’t thrilled with it and would find himself on multiple occasions fixing it the day of.”

Oscar-winning Argo screenwriter Chris Terrio was hired in 2013 to rework the script, which was first written by Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance and Man of Steel scribe David S. Goyer, so it’s very possible that long ago there were problems with it that hopefully have since been fixed. Affleck probably didn’t do anything close to a complete rewrite of the script, seeing as how he’s not credited as a writer on the film, but just contributed where he saw weak spots.

Fearing the actions of a god-like Super Hero left unchecked, Gotham City’s own formidable, forceful vigilante takes on Metropolis’s most revered, modern-day savior, while the world wrestles with what sort of hero it really needs. And with Batman and Superman at war with one another, a new threat quickly arises, putting mankind in greater danger than it’s ever known before.
