Blade Runner sequel officially titled Blade Runner 2049

October 6, 2016 by Ricky Church

Originally published October 6, 2016. Updated April 16, 2018.

One year from today the highly anticipated sequel to Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner will come out in theaters and now we have an official title: Blade Runner 2049.

Very little is known about the long-gestating film, but director Denis Villeneuve revealed to Entertainment Weekly that the film will take place decades after the original and will again be set in Los Angeles. A photo was also released showing Villeneuve, Scott, Harrison Ford and Ryan Gosling discussing the film.

The original Blade Runner took place in 2019, a dystopian future set in Los Angeles where humanity has created bioengineered cyborg servants called Replicants. Harrison Ford played Detective Rick Deckard, a ‘blade runner’ who investigated Replicants that escaped their work and attempted to integrate into society. Blade Runner did modestly well upon its released, but has become a cult classic and is known for several different cuts of the film, some overseen by Scott and some by the studio.

Blade Runner 2049 also stars Robin Wright, Jared Leto, Mackenzie Davis, Ana de Armas, Dave Bautista, Lennie James, and Barkhad Abdi. It will be released in 2D, 3D and IMAX 3D October 6, 2017.
