Brian Helgeland planned an L.A. Confidential sequel starring Russell Crowe, Guy Pearce and Chadwick Boseman

July 16, 2021 by Matt Rodgers

As Brian Helgeland’s L.A. Confidential approaches its 25th anniversary, the director has been speaking with The Ringer about scrapped plans for a potential sequel in the wake of the film’s critical and commercial success, which at one point included a role for the late Chadwick Boseman.

Helgeland revealed that he worked on a story for the sequel with James Ellroy, who wrote the novel that the first film was based on, and that he managed to get original stars Russell Crowe and Guy Pearce to come on-board. He continued to say that he’d also signed up Chadwick Boseman to play a young cop, an actor whose career he helped launch with his Jackie Robinson biopic 42.

Sadly when Helgeland presented the idea to Warner Bros. the studio turned him down – “We worked the whole thing out. It was great. And Warners passed.”

Since then there have been further attempts to continue the adventures of Bud White and Ed Exley, with CBS making a pilot starring Mark Webb, Brian J. Smith, and Walton Goggins, which unfortunately wasn’t picked up by the network.
