Chace Crawford explains why he wasn’t allowed to screen test for Captain America

August 6, 2019 by Samuel Brace

Actor Chace Crawford nearly screen-tested for the role of Captain America before being told that he wasn’t allowed to.

The role of Captain America has become a huge one in recent movie history, of course going to Chris Evans. Gossip Girl star Chace Crawford was once in the running for the role himself but he wasn’t allowed to screen test.

Speaking on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen, Crawford explained what happened: “I did have a screen test for that back in the day, but they actually didn’t let me do it because they realized I was on a show in New York for nine months of the year. Got like a screen test deal. Buddy of mine told me he went in there and they had a suit made with my name on it and the whole thing. And yeah after nine films I’m thinking, ‘Oh man, I’d have loved a shot at that.’”

So it seems his commitment to Gossip Girl cost him his chance at the role. It’s certainly a shame for the actor and interesting to think about what might have been if he had landed the role, although the vast majority of fans are surely happy that Chris Evans ultimately ended up with the shield.
