Comic Book Review – Rick and Morty: Ricklemania #1

February 19, 2025 by Andrew Newton

Andrew Newton reviews Rick and Morty: Ricklemania #1…

If you’ve ever wondered what a Rick and Morty wrestling episode would look like in comic form, Rick and Morty: Ricklemania #1 from Oni Press delivers exactly that. Written by Marc Ellerby, this first of four issues perfectly captures the show’s signature humour, self-awareness, and fast-paced absurdity—right down to Rick acknowledging he’s in a comic and Mr. Poopybutthole wrapping things up with an outro.

The story begins with a bored Morty watching TV while Rick is planning their next adventure, that is until Interdimensional Wrestling comes on and gains the attention of the entire family. This leads to a wild sci-fi wrestling adventure, complete with alien creatures, over-the-top action and plenty of Jerry. The family’s escapades play out like an episode of the show, with all the chaos and ridiculousness fans have come to expect. Although the comic does not tie into anything from the series, it does lean on knowing the characters of the family a bit – so a bit of knowledge of the show will help in fully appreciating the humour.

The artwork doesn’t copy the animation style exactly but manages to capture the spirit of the show. The character designs are expressive and the vibrant panel layouts work seamlessly with the pacing of the story, enhancing the comedic moments. The story remains lively throughout, with each page delivering the same fast-paced, unpredictable humour that fans love. While the visual style may not be a perfect match, it still maintains the show’s essence, making the comic just as enjoyable to read as watching an episode on screen.

Overall, Rick and Morty: Ricklemania #1 is a great pick for both longtime fans and casual readers who enjoy the show’s brand of sci-fi zaniness. While it doesn’t bring up the existential dread that Rick and Morty (more Morty) is known for at times, it serves up a fun, action-packed romp that feels right at home in the universe. If you’re looking for a quick dose of interdimensional wrestling chaos, this comic is definitely worth checking out.

Rating: 7/10
