David Bradley returns as the First Doctor for new Doctor Who adventure from Big Finish

September 2, 2025 by Andrew Newton

Big Finish has released a brand-new epic full-cast Doctor Who audio adventure for the First Doctor. With David Bradley reprising his role as the First Doctor, this new audio drama takes the TARDIS crew back through time to medieval England.

The First Doctor Unbound: Knights of the Round TARDIS is the first volume in a trilogy of audio adventures that move away from the main Doctor Who continuity and are more inspired by the 1960s movies starring Peter Cushing.

When the Doctor and his companions arrive in Thirteenth-Century Oxford, they end up meeting Simon de Montfort, a man responsible for helping the development of English democracy to what we know it is today. They also happen upon the renowned Franciscan friar Roger Bacon, whom the Doctor soon discovers to be a meddling individual from his own alien race. Can the Doctor stop this meddling time-traveller and keep British history on track?

Ewan Goddard, Matthew McQuinn, Jamie Glover, Keith Wickham, Sophie Matthew, Sulin Hasso and David Bradley at the front.

Joining David Bradley are Claudia Grant as his granddaughter Susan, Jamie Glover as Ian and Jemma Powell as Barbara. Keith Wickham plays the Friar, Joseph Millson plays Simon de Montfort, Sophie Matthew as Chamberlain, Ewan Goddard as Miles, Robert Gill as Henry III, Adam Howden as Baron, and Mathew McQuinn as Robert Greene.

David Bradley said: “It can be a challenge having to paint a picture with your voice, but not if you’ve got a story that’s as vivid as these on this series and so well written. In fact, when I first started doing these, I thought, where did they dig these old scripts from? Because they were so much of their time, and I didn’t realise they’d been specially written in the style of that time!”

The First Doctor Unbound: Knights of the Round TARDIS is available now for £12.99 for the download, or £16.99 for the download and a limited Collector’s Edition 2-disc box set. The second and third volumes of The First Doctor Unbound are set to be released in January 26 and May 27 and can be pre-ordered now.
