Deadpool sets February opening day record in the States, looking at $125 million domestic opening weekend

February 13, 2016 by Gary Collinson

Last night we brought you news on Deadpool’s box office opening, where it was estimated that the X-Men spinoff was looking at a domestic opening weekend of $90 million, plus a further $80 million from international markets for a whopping $170 million + global bow.

Well, we should probably adjust those numbers upwards now, as the Ryan Reynolds-headlined movie has set a February opening day record in the States, earning $47.5 million (including $12.7 million previews), shattering the previous record of $30.3 million set by Fifty Shades of Grey last year.

Revised projections are suggesting that Deadpool could now pull in a three-day haul of $115-$123 million and four-day haul of between $130-$136 million, which would claim another record from Fifty Shades of Grey, which managed a $93 million four-day weekend when it set the record.

Throw in the international grosses, and Deadpool is already proving to be a major hit for Fox.

Based upon Marvel Comics’ most unconventional anti-hero, DEADPOOL tells the origin story of former Special Forces operative turned mercenary Wade Wilson, who after being subjected to a rogue experiment that leaves him with accelerated healing powers, adopts the alter ego Deadpool. Armed with his new abilities and a dark, twisted sense of humor, Deadpool hunts down the man who nearly destroyed his life.

Deadpool is set for release on February 10th in the UK and February 12th in the States and sees Ryan Reynolds reprising the role of the Merc with a Mouth alongside T.J. Miller (Transformers: Age of Extinction) as Weasel, Morena Baccarin (Gotham) as Copycat, Gina Carano (Fast & Furious 6) as Angel Dust, Ed Skrein (Game of Thrones) as Ajax, Stefan Kapicic (24) as Colossus, Leslie Uggams (Roots) as Blind Al and newcomer Brianna Hildebrand as Negasonic Teenage Warhead.
