Descent of Dragons expansion coming to Hearthstone later this month

January 10, 2020 by Andrew Newton

Blizzard Entertainment has announced that Descent of Dragons, the latest expansion for their free-to-play digital card game Hearthstone, will arrive on 21st January.  This highly anticipated solo adventure takes players across two campaigns: one where players fight for the nefarious Archvillain Rafaam and the League of E.V.I.L. to resurrect the progenitor dragon Galakrond, and another where they’ll fight alongside the League of Explorers to prevent the resurrection from taking place.  See more in the trailer below…

The Descent of Dragons expansion and the fight to resurrect Galakrond is the culmination of the year-long story that occupied 2019, the Year of the Dragon, and will see a return to the original solo adventure format that proved popular with players back in the day. Galakrond’s Awakening consists of four installments (with the first releasing this January) and will each consist of 2 chapters.

Players will take on a series of boss encounters with pre-built decks that will earn them 35 new collectible cards, which, when earned can be added to Standard and Wild decks.  Those who manage to beat both the League of E.V.I.L. and League of Explorers stories will unlock Heroic mode and be able to take on much harder versions of the bosses but be able to use their own decks made with whatever cards is in their collections.

“The Year of the Dragon has been a dynamic and exciting one for Hearthstone, with a series of meta-shifting expansions, an ambitious year-long story, and a rapid cadence of new features and updates that have fundamentally evolved the game,” said J. Allen Brack, president of Blizzard Entertainment. “Galakrond’s Awakening will bring the story we’ve been telling in the game all year to an epic and fitting conclusion, and we can’t wait to share it with everyone.”

The first installment of Descent of Dragons, named Battle of the Frozen Coast, releases on 21st January.
