Director David Ayer says Suicide Squad is “The Dirty Dozen with supervillains”

October 20, 2014 by Gary Collinson

Last week, Warner Bros. announced a slate of DC movies to follow Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, with the David Ayer-directed Suicide Squad joining Zack Snyder’s DC team-up as part of the studio’s 2016 offerings. Now the director has briefly spoken about the supervillain ensemble during a promotional interview for his latest film Fury, describing it as “The Dirty Dozen with supervillains”. Check out his comments below…

“Fury whetted my appetite for a bigger canvas and this idea of world creation,” Ayer tells Empire Online. “You can do amazing things as a filmmaker if you have the proper tools, and those are time and money. I can say that it’s a Dirty Dozen with supervillains. Then I can ask the question, ‘Does a movie really need good guys?'”

After seemingly confirming the inclusion of Captain Boomerang, Ayer then went on to discuss his appreciation for the comic book genre, stating that: “I love the passion [comic-book fans] have for these characters and these worlds. I think there’s something incredible about the comic genre and technology has finally caught up with pen and ink to render these fantastic worlds in a way that feels believable and visceral to audiences. It’s a secular religion in that regards. The mythology that these characters represent – the idea of them as fallen gods on Earth – is intriguing to me. I can’t wait to start exploring those corridors.”

Suicide Squad is set for release in 2016, with Will Smith (After Earth), Margot Robbie (The Wolf of Wall Street), Tom Hardy (The Dark Knight Rises) and Ryan Gosling (Drive) reportedly on Warner’s shortlist for roles.
