Edgar Wright officially in talks to direct Sydney Sweeney’s Barbarella remake

May 13, 2024 by Matt Rodgers

Following the announcement that Edgar Wright is set to direct Glen Powell in a remake of The Running Man, the Hot Fuzz director hasn’t had to look far when it comes to inspiration for his next project, with news emerging that he is in talks to take the reins on Powell’s Anyone But You co-star Sydney Sweeney’s Barbarella reboot.

According to Deadline Sony Pictures has tasked Jane Goldman (Stardust) and Honey Ross with writing a new Barbarella, and as rumoured earlier this year, the studio are keen to reunite with Baby Driver director Wright, who has reportedly been eyeing the project for some time.

Wright and Sweeney have supposedly had meetings, with Sony and their leading lady keen on the Last Night in Soho directors unique visual style being used to bring the world of Barbarella to life.

The original Barbarella follows an astronaut from the 41st century who sets out to find and stop an evil scientist named Durand Durand, whose Positronic Ray threatens to bring evil back into the galaxy.

The 1968 movie – directed by Roger Vadim and starring Jane Fonda in the title role – wasn’t successful at the time, but soon developed a cult following and is viewed as a formative sci-fi film for plenty of genre fans.
