Edgar Wright says deal for Baby Driver sequel is “being hammered out as we speak”

December 6, 2017 by Tom Beasley

Writer-director Edgar Wright looks set to return to make a sequel to his kinetic car chase blockbuster Baby Driver and has said a deal is “being hammered out as we speak”.

Wright told Entertainment Weekly he is in the midst of talks surrounding a follow-up and said nothing had been agreed yet, but hoped he would “at least write” the sequel.

Baby Driver, which starred Ansel Elgort as a getaway driver with tinnitus, made more than $220 million at the global box office from a mere $34m budget.

Wright said he has “lots of ideas” for a sequel, but also has many other projects in the pipeline and does not want to see a repeat of his troubles with Marvel’s Ant-Man that led to a big gap in his filmography.

He said: “Those talks are already in the works. The deal is being hammered out as we speak. So, hopefully, I’m going to at least write a second one.

“I’ve definitely got lots of ideas. Whether it’s the next movie, I don’t know. I’m just working that out at the moment, actually.

“I have a couple of things that I’ve been developing, and also a couple of new ideas that I had, and all the nice things things that I’ve been offered since Baby Driver.

“I would like to get back on the saddle very shortly, because — slightly beyond my control — but there was four years between The World’s End and Baby Driver.

“I don’t want it to be that long again. I would love to have a film out in the next two years.”

Wright was also asked about the allegations of sexual misconduct made in recent months against Kevin Spacey, who played crime boss Doc in Baby Driver.

The director said he was “troubled and distressed” by the allegations and offered his support to the victims who have come forward.

He added: “I want to stress that hundreds of other cast and crew members worked on this movie and they contributed truly great work to this production.

“I remain very proud of the finished film and I remain very proud of their tireless efforts.

“I don’t want to appear insensitive in any way, but I really have to celebrate the incredible work of my cast and crew.

“I would be nothing without them and I don’t want them to be tarnished by the private actions of one person.”

A talented, young getaway driver (Ansel Elgort) relies on the beat of his personal soundtrack to be the best in the game. When he meets the girl of his dreams (Lily James), Baby sees a chance to ditch his criminal life and make a clean getaway. But after being coerced into working for a crime boss (Kevin Spacey), he must face the music when a doomed heist threatens his life, love and freedom. See it Only In Cinemas.

Baby Driver features a cast that includes Ansel Elgort, Kevin Spacey, Lily James, Jamie Foxx, Jon Hamm, and Eiza Gonzalez.
