Dave Bautista has described working on the last two Avengers movies as “the oddest way I’ve done a film” and said he didn’t even know Drax would be turned to dust at the end of Infinity War.
In an interview with Flickering Myth to promote his new action-comedy Stuber, Bautista discussed his time on the Avengers films and provided an update on the upcoming third Guardians of the Galaxy outing.
He said he was told “pretty much nothing” about the over-arching story being told by directing duo Joe and Anthony Russo across the two Marvel blockbusters.

In fact, Bautista wasn’t even sure what would happen to his own character, Drax the Destroyer, in the two films.
“As a performer, it was the oddest way I’ve done a film,” he said. “We were really kept in the dark. Everybody, across the board.”
He added: “I shot a lot of stuff that was out of sequence and some of the stuff I shot wasn’t used. I don’t know if things changed after the first film was released. I had no idea that I was being vapourised in the first film. I didn’t know how it was ending.”
Even after he had sat down to watch Infinity War, Bautista wasn’t sure what Drax’s fate would be in the sequel, despite the fact he’d already filmed his role.
He said: “I honestly didn’t think I was going to be in the second film at all. I was surprised when I went to the theaters and saw myself pop up. I thought I was gonna be possibly completely cut out of Endgame, so I was actually happy to be in it. I was really disconnected as a performer and totally engaged as a fan.”

Bautista also weighed in on his return to the role of Drax in Guardians of the Galaxy 3, which will once again be written and directed by James Gunn.
Gunn was sacked by Disney after old tweets featuring off-colour jokes about rape and child abuse were highlighted on social media.
Along with his co-stars, Bautista was vocal in his anger about what happened to Gunn and signed an open letter calling for his reinstatement, which ultimately did happen in March.
Gunn is committed to make DC movie The Suicide Squad for rival studio Warner Bros, but is expected to return to the Guardians threequel afterwards.

Bautista said he expects the original script Gunn had written before his sacking to change as a result of MCU events since then and said there are a lot of unknowns surrounding the movie.
“It’ll be made. It’s gonna happen. When? I have no idea,” Bautista said, adding: “I can tell you that, obviously, since James has been rehired, there needs to be a conclusion.”
