Fourth Cloverfield movie Overlord still planned for theatrical release

February 10, 2018 by Gary Collinson

Netflix dropped a huge surprise this past Sunday by releasing The Cloverfield Paradox, with the streaming service picking up the rights to the J.J. Abrams-produced sci-fi after its planned theatrical release date had been pushed back on several occasions.

According to THR, the deal was worth in excess of $50 million, and immediately put the Julius Onah-helmed movie into profit. It was also described as a “rescue plan”, with Paramount CEO Jim Gianopulos apparently concerned that the movie was “unsalvageable” and would tank at the box office.

As it happens, The Cloverfield Paradox received some pretty scathing reviews, likely justifying Gianopulos’ concerns, but it seems that Paramount isn’t quite ready to call time on the Cloverfield series, as at present the studio reportedly still intends on giving a theatrical release to the next instalment, Overlord.

Overlord is directed by Julius Avery (Son of a Gun) and features a cast that includes Jovan Adepo (Fences), Wyatt Russell (22 Jump Street), Jacob Anderson (Game of Thrones), Dominic Applewhite (The King’s Speech), Pilou Asbaek (Ghost in the Shell), Iain de Caestecker (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.), John Magaro (The Big Short), Mathilde Ollivier (The Misfortunes of Francois Jane) and Bokeem Woodbine (Spider-Man: Homecoming). The official synopsis reads:

On the eve of D-Day, American paratroopers are dropped behind enemy lines to carry out a mission crucial to the invasion’s success. But as they approach their target, they begin to realize there is more going on in this Nazi-occupied village than a simple military operation. They find themselves fighting against supernatural forces, part of a Nazi experiment.
