Giancarlo Esposito promises “major, major, epic, epic lightsaber action” in The Mandalorian season 2

February 29, 2020 by Amie Cranswick

The season finale of Disney+’s live-action Star Wars series The Mandalorian featured a rather exciting reveal for fans of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, as Giancarlo Esposito’s villainous Moff Gideon was seen to be in possession of the Darksaber, an ancient black-bladed lightsaber and Mandalorian artefact.

Quite how Gideon came to be in possession of the Darksaber is a mystery at present (in continuity, it was last seen being handed down from Sabrine Wren to the Mandalorian Bo-Katan Kryze in Star Wars Rebels), and while it’s unclear whether we’ll get an answer to that question in season two of The Mandalorian, Esposito has promised that the blade will see plenty of action when the series returns later this year.

“[Moff Gideon will be] in a bit of a struggle with someone else [in season 2], which I’m hoping you will enjoy,” Esposito told Comic Book during a recent convention appearance. “[There will be] major, major, epic, epic lightsaber action happening on this show.”

Now, it’s worth noting that “lightsaber action” doesn’t necessarily mean “lightsaber duels”, but if it is the latter, then the list of candidates for Gideon’s opponent(s) is pretty slim at this point in the timeline. With the second season reportedly set to feature “established characters from the Skywalker saga’s feature films mythology”, is it possible that Luke Skywalker could make an appearance? Or might  we finally see the live-action introduction of Ahsoka Tano (who, as we saw in the finale of Rebels, is currently alive and well post-ROTJ and hanging out with former Darksaber custodian Sabine)? All speculation of course at this point, but exciting speculation nonetheless. Let us know your thoughts in the comments, or on our social channels @flickeringmyth…

After the stories of Jango and Boba Fett, another warrior emerges in the Star Wars universe. The Mandalorian is set after the fall of the Empire and before the emergence of the First Order. The series depicts a lone bounty hunter in the outer reaches of the galaxy far from the authority of the New Republic.

Pedro Pascal (Game of Thrones) leads the cast of The Mandalorian, alongside the likes of Gina Carano (Deadpool), Carl Weathers (Rocky), Nick Nolte (Afflication), Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad), Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok) and Werner Herzog (Grizzly Man).
