HBO has had some success turning television series such as Sex and the City and Entourage into feature length films, but one that many fans have asked for over the years is a big screen outing for the Western series Deadwood. A feature length film has been rumoured to be in development at HBO every now and again, but now it seems closer to actually happening than its ever been.
Former Deadwood star Ian McShane spoke to TVLine and when asked for an update about the project, he said revealed that “a two-hour movie script has been delivered to HBO.” He also jokingly added that: “If they don’t deliver a finished product, blame them.”
McShane played Al Swearengen on Deadwood, the owner of the Gem Saloon brothel and a pimp in the town of Deadwood. If a film does get made, McShane sounds pretty interested in going back to the Old West: “We’d all love to do it. It would be nice to see all of the old gang again.”
Deadwood originally ran on HBO for three 12 episode seasons in 2004 – 2006 and was nominated for 28 Emmys during its run, winning 8 of them. The series was created by David Mitch and also starred Justified‘s Timothy Olyphant and House of Cards‘ Molly Parker. McShane will be seen next in Bryan Fuller’s adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s American Gods on STARZ as the mysterious Mr. Wednesday.
