Is Warner Bros. considering a theatrical release for Batgirl?

April 25, 2022 by Matt Rodgers

Warner Bros. and DC Films’ upcoming Batgirl movie is currently set to debut on HBO Max, but a report has emerged that suggests there are ongoing discussions at the studio as to whether they should release the Leslie Grace-headlined superhero film in theaters.

Stories have already surfaced regarding early talks about a sequel, so the head-honchos at Warner Bros. must be pleased with what they’ve seen from the debut outing of Barbara Gordon’s crime-fighting alter-ego, and now Matthew Belloni at Puck News has written about how the recent troubles at Netflix has forced a rethink when it comes to streaming strategies, and that Batgirl could be given a theatrical run.

According to the report, The Batman‘s $750M and counting global cume at the box-office, followed by the “huge numbers” the Robert Pattinson blockbuster has posted on HBO Max since it debuted last week, has prompted an “interesting debate” at Warner Bros. about whether they should spend a little more on the in-the-can mid-budget comic book film and release it on the big screen.

Variety reported at the time that when Discovery closed its $43 billion deal for WarnerMedia at the start of April they were looking at an overhaul of DC Entertainment, so maybe CEO David Zaslav sees this as a new direction for Batgirl.

If Batgirl did make the leap to the big-screen, she would follow in the footsteps DC’s Blue Beetle, another mid-range DC property that was meant to launch on HBO Max before they reshuffled the pack and decided to grant it a theatrical release in 2023.

Let us know whether you’d like to see Batgirl on the big-screen by continuing the discussion over on our social channels @FlickeringMyth….

Batgirl is directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah (Bad Boys For Life) and stars Leslie Grace (In the Heights) as Barbara Gordon/Batgirl, J.K. Simmons (Justice League) as Commissioner Jim Gordon, Micheal Keaton (The Flash) as Bruce Wayne/Batman, Brendan Fraser (Doom Patrol) as Firefly, Ivory Aquino (When They See Us) as Alysia Yeoh and Jacob Scipio (Bad Boys for Life), Rebecca Front (Avenue 5), Corey Johnson (Morbius) and Ethan Kai (Killing Eve) in as-yet-unrevealed roles.

Batgirl is currently set to premiere directly on HBO Max as an HBO Max Original.
