J.K. Simmons and Ben Affleck discuss Justice League’s “badass” Commissioner Gordon

November 14, 2017 by Gary Collinson

In just a few days time, we’ll be introduced to the newest take on Gotham City’s Police Commissioner James Gordon, as Oscar-winner J.K. Simmons makes his DC Extended Universe debut in the DC blockbuster Justice League, and Simmons has been chatting about his “badass” take on the iconic character.

“My take on Commissioner Gordon is that he’s a badass,” said Simmons. “But that’s an under-appreciated part of who he is, because he’s eclipsed by the ultimate badass, Batman. But Gordon is a tough ex-Marine, who worked his way up and can handle himself in the turf of bad guys. Compared to Batman, he’s just a regular guy, but compared to most people, he’s a champion.”

“I did another movie with J.K. called The Accountant, and he’s a fine actor,” added Ben Affleck, who could reunite with Simmons on The Batman, assuming Affleck decides to sign on for the solo movie after his recent comments. “I really like him. Obviously he was great in Whiplash, and he’s perfect as Commissioner Gordon. J.K. lands a real gravitas to the role. He’s got that kind of realism down, where he’s just so world weary and gritty. Here’s a guy that’s been working the beat of Gotham for decades.”

As we saw last summer, Simmons had been hitting the gym hard and was looking super shredded going in to Justice League, and Affleck also commented on his co-star’s physique, joking that: “I think he just likes to be ripped… It’s a little weird, it’s like the Super Hero Commissioner Gordon, who takes his shirt off and stars flexing [Laughs]. J.K.’s just as strong as the members of the Justice League.”

Fueled by his restored faith in humanity and inspired by Superman’s selfless act, Bruce Wayne enlists the help of his newfound ally, Diana Prince, to face an even greater enemy. Together, Batman and Wonder Woman work quickly to find and recruit a team of metahumans to stand against this newly awakened threat. But despite the formation of this unprecedented league of heroes—Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg and The Flash—it may already be too late to save the planet from an assault of catastrophic proportions.

Justice League will reunite Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice stars Henry Cavill as Superman, Ben Affleck as Batman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Ray Fisher as Cyborg, Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Ezra Miller as The Flash, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Jeremy Irons as Alfred Pennyworth, Diane Lane as Martha Kent, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, Connie Nielsen as Queen Hippolyta and Robin Wright as General Antiope alongside J.K. Simmons (Whiplash) as Commissioner Gordon, Amber Heard (The Danish Girl) as Mera, Willem Dafoe (Spider-Man) as Vulko, Kiersey Clemons (Dope) as Iris West, Ciaran Hinds (Game of Thrones) as Steppenwolf, and Julian Lewis Jones (Stella) and Michael McElhatton (Game of Thrones) in as-yet-unrevealed roles.
