James Gunn and Peter Safran working on a ‘DC Bible’ with an eight-to-ten year plan

November 17, 2022 by EJ Moreno

James Gunn and Peter Safran are preparing the future of DC Studios with a massive game plan ahead of them.

During a recent virtual town hall, Gunn and Safran joined Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav to hype their plans.

Starting, Safran declared the plan for DC Studios from now on was familiar to another superhero brand. “This was such a unique opportunity to tell one great overarching story,” Safran said. “One beautiful big story across film, television gaming, live-action, and animation.”

Gunn adds that the trio is already working on an eight-to-ten-year plan for the story: “The opportunity to make DC as great as it can be and as it should be — that is the reason why I’m doing this job because I know that Peter and I can do that.”

“We spent the past couple days with a group of some of the best thinkers in the industry, the best writers in the industry, starting to map out that eight to 10-year plan of what it’s going to look like in theater, in TV, in animation, across the board for these characters,” Gunn continued.

Gunn also expressed his love for more obscure DC characters, such as The Metal Men and Bat-Mite, but he’s clearly a fan of the big heroes as well. “I love Superman, and I love Batman. I love their interaction. I love the ways in which they’re the same and the ways in which they are completely different.”

Zaslav shares that these plans will include a lot for DC, not just a new Batman movie every few years.

“I think over the next few years, you’re going to see a lot of growth and opportunity around DC; there’s not going to be four Batmans,” Zaslav said. “And so part of our strategy is, drive the hell out of DC, which James and Peter are going to do. I think they’ve thrilled the fans. I think they’re going to thrill you over a period of time.”

Addressing Zaslav, James Gunn said, “I know that you are doing all this because you love these characters too, and you love the possibility and the hope that they represent, and that has been clear to us from the beginning. We would have never considered this if that wasn’t the case, so thank you.”

While we are awaiting the actual DCU plans, one thing is sure: the return of Zack Snyder isn’t happening just yet. In a recent appearance on The Preston and Steve Show, the filmmaker was asked if DC Studios has been in contact with him, and he offered up his genuine feelings.

In the interview, Snyder says there’s no contact but wishes them the best. “As far as I know, which is very little, I am doing my thing and haven’t had anyone give me a call or anything. So I am just wishing them all the best and hoping that they make some cool movies.”
