James Gunn says Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow script “is above and beyond anything I hoped it would be”

November 16, 2023 by Gary Collinson

Coming hot on the heels of trade reports that Ana Nogueira (The Vampire Diaries) is set to pen the script for DC Studios’ Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow movie, co-chairman James Gunn has taken to social media to welcome the actress-turned screenwriter to the new DC Universe as well as singing the praises for the screenplay she’s putting together.

“A hearty public welcome to Ana Nogueira to the DC Studios family,” shared Gunn on Instagram. “Ana is an amazing writer whose screenplay adaptation of Woman of Tomorrow is above and beyond anything I hoped it would be. We’re excited to be moving forward on this unique take on Supergirl in this beautiful, star-spanning tale.”

As it happens, this isn’t Nogueira’s first brush with Kara Zor-El, as she was previously attached to write a Supergirl solo movie for the DC Extended Universe under the previous regime, which would have saw Sasha Calle reprising her role from The Flash. That script impressed Gunn and fellow DC Studios chief Peter Safran enough to invite her back for Woman of Tomorrow, although it remains to be seen if The Flash star Calle will follow.

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is inspired by the limited series of the same name from comic book writer Tom King, with Gunn previously teasing during his initial DC slate announcement that: “Superman is a guy sent to Earth and raised by loving parents, where Supergirl in this story, she is a character raised on a chunk of Krypton. She watched everybody around her perish in some terrible way, so she’s a much more jaded character.”

Are you looking forward to Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow? Would you like to see Sasha Calle back in the role? Let us know on our socials @FlickeringMyth…
