James Gunn confirms that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will be set after Avengers 4

June 23, 2018 by Gary Collinson

Last week, Avengers: Infinity War directors Anthony and Joe Russo were asked whether the fact that Marvel has announced the likes of Spider-Man: Homecoming 2 and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 detracts from the end of the superhero blockbuster, and suggests we’ll be seeing the return of the vast majority of the fallen heroes in next year’s Avengers 4.

The Russos played down the possibility, stating that we shouldn’t “expect everything to movie forward in a linear fashion in the Marvel universe” and that “there’s four years between Guardians Vol. 2 and Infinity War – that’s a long time, and a lot of Guardians stories to tell.”

So, does that mean 2020’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will take place prior to Infinity War? Here’s James Gunn to clarify:

Given that Rocket Raccoon was the only Guardian left standing at the end of Infinity War, it seems safe to assume that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 isn’t going to be a Rocket solo movie. Therefore, the only question appears to be whether we can expect to see the return of all of Rocket’s buddies, or if it will be limited to those Guardians who disappeared post-Snap.

Gamora fans will no doubt be hoping for the former.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is slated for release in 2020.
