The Russos say “don’t expect everything to move forward in a linear fashion in the Marvel universe” after Avengers: Infinity War

June 15, 2018 by Gary Collinson

As we already know, the next batch of Marvel movies will include Spider-Man: Homecoming 2, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and Black Panther 2, so although Marvel Studios wiped out half of its roster of superheroes in Avengers: Infinity War with Thanos’ snap, the expectation is that most – if not all – of the characters who turned to dust will be back next year for Avengers 4.

However, speaking to The Huffington Post, directors Anthony and Joe Russo have suggested that may not be the case after all, and that the aforementioned sequels may well take place prior to Infinity War.

“Here’s the thing, I think it’s important to remember anything is possible in the MCU [Marvel Cinematic Universe],” said Anthony. “Just because there’s a sequel on the books doesn’t mean … people become accustomed to time moving linearly in the MCU. That doesn’t necessarily have to be the case. There’s a lot of very inventive ways of where the story can go.”

“There’s four years between Guardians 2 and Infinity War, ” added Joe. “That’s a long time, and a lot of Guardians stories to tell. Again, as Anthony said, don’t expect everything to move forward in a linear fashion in the Marvel universe.”

As we’ve seen with Captain America: The First Avenger and the upcoming Ant-Man and the Wasp and Captain Marvel, Marvel certainly isn’t averse to moving around the MCU timeline.

James Gunn has previously stated that Guardians Vol. 3 will be the last movie with the original roster of Guardians, so that could well take place pre-Infinity War. However, it has also been said that the Spider-Man series would take inspiration from Harry Potter and follow Peter Parker throughout high school, so…

How do you think Marvel will handle ‘The Snap’ in Avengers 4 and moving forward? Do you expect to see everyone back? Let us know in the comments…
