Jaume Collet-Serra to direct Dwayne Johnson in Jungle Cruise, passes on Suicide Squad 2

July 31, 2017 by Gary Collinson

Deadline is reporting that director Jaume Collet-Serra (The Shallows) has signed on to direct Disney’s upcoming action adventure Jungle Cruise, which is based on the classic theme park attraction and will be headlined by Dwayne Johnson.

As a result, Collet-Serra is now out of contention for Warner Bros.’ DC Extended Universe sequel Suicide Squad 2, having emerged as the front-runner for project earlier this month. Collet-Serra now becomes the second filmmaker to pass on the Suicide Squad sequel after Mel Gibson.

Plot details for Jungle Cruise are being kept under wraps, but the hope is to launch an Indiana Jones-style franchise. The latest draft of the script has been penned by J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay (Star Trek Beyond), and the film is slated for release in 2018.
