Joe Robert Cole to pen Marvel’s Black Panther

October 6, 2015 by Justin Cook

Black Panther, which will be released in the latter half of Phase Three of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, may still be a few years away, but regardless, Joe Robert Cole is nearing a deal with Marvel to pen the film’s script.

If Cole’s name looks familiar, it’s probably because he was rumored to write Marvel’s Inhumans, the last film of Phase Three; he is no longer attached to the project, if he ever was, and it’s very unlikely that any work he had done on it will be used.

Outside of his MCU involvement, Cole is relatively unknown, besides writing, directing and editing the 2011 indie film Amber Lake. He comes from Marvel’s in-house writing program, which Guardians of the Galaxy and Captain Marvel writer Nicole Perlman hails from as well.

According to The Wrap, Marvel is not looking to choose a director until the script is completed, so rumors of F. Gary Gray (Straight Outta Compton) being wanted by Marvel are probably untrue, especially considering that it looks like he’ll be directing Fast 8. In fact, the only filmmaker that was offered the film was Selma director Ava DuVernay, who turned Marvel down.

Chadwick Boseman is on board to star as T’Challa/Black Pather, while Andy Serkis will most likely be reprising his role as Ulysses Klaue/Klaw from Avengers: Age of Ultron. The film’s release date is set for July 6, 2018.
