John Boyega says his Star Wars co-stars were supportive of his Sequel Trilogy criticism, open to returning as Finn

October 28, 2020 by Gary Collinson

Many Star Wars fans found themselves underwhelmed by Disney and Lucasfilm’s Sequel Trilogy – including one who just so happened to be part of the core cast of The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker.

John Boyega, who plays the Stormtrooper-turned-Resistance big shot Finn, certainly hasn’t been shy when it comes to expressing his disappointment with his character’s arc and overall level of involvement in the trilogy, the actor stating earlier this year that he felt the movies pushed aside the non-white characters: “What I would say to Disney is do not bring out a Black character, market them to be much more important in the franchise than they are and then have them pushed to the side.”

Now, during an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Boyega has explained that his co-stars Daisy Ridley, Oscar Isaac and Kelly Marie Tran were fully supportive of his comments and were already aware of his concerns.

“I got a text message from Daisy, I mean we talk all the time. But to be fair I’m really, really close with my castmates, specifically Oscar and Daisy. Myself and Kelly had really transparent and loving conversations that I will never forget for the rest of my career. We were all already speaking about things, so me saying this wasn’t really a shock to them. One must always talk about things so that in moving on for the next actor in that position, that’s now not going to be an alien conversation.”

Back in July, Boyega ruled out any potential return to the galaxy far away, stating “Lol no thank you, I’ve moved on. Not into playing one role for too long. I have more to offer than that.” However, it seems he’s now had a slight change of heart, going on to tell ET that: “I don’t know what’s going on with Star Wars. I’m alive – that’s one thing. But it would depend on story and if Daisy [Ridley] and Oscar [Isaac] are coming back. I wouldn’t want to be running around by myself or anything.”

Similarly, in an interview with Yahoo, Boyega also appeared open to the prospect of being “Disney+’d”, the star telling the outlet: “I’m a Mandalorian fan, so Lucasfilm is doing very well with the TV shows. An animated show would be dope! We could do it from home!”.
