Jon Favreau discusses Star Wars: The Book of Boba Fett and the “power vacuum” after the death of Jabba

November 23, 2021 by Amie Cranswick

As we saw in the post-credits scene of The Mandalorian’s season two finale, Temuera Morrison’s legendary bounty hunter Boba Fett made his return to Tatooine, assuming control of the criminal empire once run by the mighty Jabba the Hutt before his death at the hands of Princess Leia in Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi.

The story is set to continue this December with the spinoff series Star Wars: The Book of Boba Fett, and speaking to Empire Magazine, executive producer Jon Favreau has been discussing the challenges that Boba will face as he attempts to fill the power vacuum left after the death of the Hutt crime lord.

“There is a power vacuum, because Jabba is gone,” states Favreau. Jabba was clearly a very strong and imposing leader, who people were very scared of, and who seemed to rule with an iron fist. You pull somebody like that out of the ecosystem of Tatooine – and Hutt Space in general – and you have the opportunity that’s ripe in the gangster genre.”

“Although Boba Fett is a very experienced bounty hunter, he’s not experienced at running a criminal syndicate or managing forces,” Favreau continued. “He’s not normally a newcomer. He’s an expert as we see him in most areas. But in this case, he’s trying to transition to another position.”

Along with the quotes from Favreau, Empire also unveiled a new shot from The Book of Boba Fett featuring Temuera Morrison and The Mandalorian co-star Ming-Na Wen, who reprises the role of mercenary Fennec Shand.

“The Book of Boba Fett,” a thrilling Star Wars adventure, finds legendary bounty hunter Boba Fett and mercenary Fennec Shand navigating the Galaxy’s underworld when they return to the sands of Tatooine to stake their claim on the territory once ruled by Jabba the Hutt and his crime syndicate.

Star Wars: The Book of Boba Fett is set to premiere on Disney+ on December 29th and is executive produced by The Mandalorian’s Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni along with Robert Rodriguez, who directed Boba’s return in The Mandalorian season 2’s ‘The Tragedy’, and Lucasfilm’s Kathleen Kennedy.

Star Wars: The Book of Boba Fett will premiere on Disney+ on December 29th.
