Jon Favreau wants to make a new Star Wars Holiday Special for Disney+

September 24, 2019 by Amie Cranswick

Jon Favreau brings the Star Wars franchise to the small screen this November with the premiere of The Mandalorian, a big-budget live-action series for the Disney+ streaming service.

The hotly-anticipated series isn’t the first live-action TV offering from Lucasfilm – that honour belongs to the notorious Star Wars Holiday Special, a musical variety show/travesty which has been buried deep within the Lucasfilm vaults since its solitary airing back in November 1978.

Speaking to ET at the Saturn Awards, Favreau was asked about his future Star Wars ambitions, with the showrunner stating that he’d like to put together a new Holiday Special for Disney.

“I would love to do someday, maybe on Disney+, we’ll do a holiday special. Wouldn’t that be wonderful? I gotta pitch that to them. We’ll see. If you want to see a Holiday Special, let Disney+ know.”

As it happens, The Mandalorian includes a direct reference to the Star Wars Holiday Special, with Pedro Pascal’s bounty hunter armed with an Amban phase-pulse blaster – the very same weapon that Boba Fett wielded during his pre-Empire Strikes Back Star Wars debut in an animated segment from the show, which is perhaps the only part of the Holiday Special that won’t leave you clawing your eyes out.

The Mandalorian sees Pedro Pascal (Game of Thrones) leading a cast that includes Gina Carano (Deadpool), Carl Weathers (Rocky), Nick Nolte (Afflication), Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad), Emily Swallow (Supernatural), Omid Abtahi (American Gods), Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok), Ming-Na Wen (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) and Werner Herzog (Grizzly Man). It is set to premiere on Disney+ on November 12th 2019.
