Jude Law discusses his Captain Marvel character, but won’t confirm if he’s playing Mar-Vell

September 7, 2018 by Amie Cranswick

Although it was initially reported that Jude Law had been cast as Doctor Walter Lawson, a.k.a. Mar-Vell, in next year’s superhero blockbuster Captain Marvel, Marvel Studios is yet to offer any official confirmation on his role and this week’s Entertainment Weekly’s first-look feature opted against naming him, referring instead to the character as the “enigmatic commander” of the Starforce team.

Speaking to EW, Law refused to be drawn on his character’s identity, but did offer up some insight, stating that: “He is driven by a belief in the divine leadership of the Kree people. So he’s almost a devout warrior — unquestioning, conservative, but inspirational.”

Law also discussed how his character views Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers, adding that: “These extraordinary powers she has, he sees them as something of a blessing and something that she has to learn how to control. That’s a motif throughout the piece, the element of learning to control one’s emotions and to use your powers wisely.”

The secrecy surrounding Law’s role is certainly intriguing, and there seems to no reason to keep his identity under wraps if the original Mar-Vell report was correct. As such, a number of theories are already doing the rounds, with Screen Rant putting together a rather convincing case for the villain Yon-Rogg.

Captain Marvel follows Carol Danvers as she becomes one of the universe’s most powerful heroes when Earth is caught in the middle of a galactic war between two alien races. Captain Marvel is being directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck (Mississippi Grind) and sees Brie Larson (Kong: Skull Island) leading the cast as Carol Danvers alongside Samuel L. Jackson (The Avengers), Ben Mendelsohn (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story), Djimon Hounsou (Guardians of the Galaxy), Lee Pace (Guardians of the Galaxy), Lashana Lynch (Fast Girls), Gemma Chan (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them), Algenis Perez Soto (Sambá), Rune Temte (Eddie The Eagle), McKenna Grace (I, Tonya), Annette Bening (American Beauty), McKenna Grace (Gifted), Ana Ayora (The Big Wedding), Vik Sahay (Chuck), Kenneth Mitchell (Star Trek: Discovery), Chuku Modo (The Good Doctor), Clark Gregg (The Avengers) and Jude Law (Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald).
