Jurassic World Dominion secures China release

May 18, 2022 by Gary Collinson

In what’s sure to be a major boost to the film’s global box office prospects, Universal Pictures has secured a Chinese theatrical release for next month’s hotly-anticipated Jurassic World Dominion, with the Colin Trevorrow-directed sequel set to open day-and-date with North America and the UK on June 10th.

China has proven to be a strong market for the Jurassic World movies, with the 2015 film grossing $229 million and the 2018 follow-up earning $261 million. However, Dominion’s release in the Middle Kingdom had not been a sure thing, with Chinese regulators having drastically cut back on the number of Hollywood releases since the pandemic, and those that have made it – see The Batman, Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, Uncharted et. al. – failing to make much of an impact in terms of box office.

The Chinese market is also currently suffering as a result of lockdowns in key cities such as Shanghai and Beijing, with around 37% of theaters closed following COVID spikes. However, restrictions are due to lift on June 1st, and so Universal will be hoping the prospect of some epic Hollywood dinosaur action will be enough to lure moviegoers back to the cinemas.

This summer, experience the epic conclusion to the Jurassic era as two generations unite for the first time. Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard are joined by Oscar®-winner Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum, and Sam Neill in Jurassic World Dominion, a bold, timely, and breathtaking new adventure that spans the globe.

From Jurassic World architect and director Colin Trevorrow, Dominion takes place four years after Isla Nublar has been destroyed. Dinosaurs now live—and hunt—alongside humans all over the world. This fragile balance will reshape the future and determine, once and for all, whether human beings are to remain the apex predators on a planet they now share with history’s most fearsome creatures.

The film features new cast members DeWanda Wise (She’s Gotta Have It), Emmy nominee Mamoudou Athie (Archive 81), Dichen Lachman (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.), Scott Haze (Minari), and Campbell Scott (The Amazing Spider-Man 2). The film’s returning cast includes BD Wong as Dr. Henry Wu, Justice Smith as Franklin Webb, Daniella Pineda as Dr. Zia Rodriguez, and Omar Sy as Barry Sembenè.

Jurassic World Dominion comes to cinemas on June 10th, 2022.
