Justice League trailer, Valerian flops hard, Thor: Ragnarok trailer and more – Weekend News Roundup

July 24, 2017 by Luke Owen

YOU CAN’T SAVE THE WORLD ALONE

While Marvel Studios (again) didn’t release their trailer for Avengers: Infinity War from San Diego Comic Con, Warner Bros. put up a whopping four-minute trailer for this November’s Justice League. The trailer features Batman (Ben Affleck), Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), The Flash (Ezra Miller), Cyborg (Ray Fisher) and Aquaman (Jason Mamoa) do action against Steppenwolf (Ciaran Hinds), and you can watch it here.

BLACK PANTHER FOOTAGE

Also shown at Marvel Studio’s panel was footage from next year’s Black Panther starring Chadwick Boseman, Lupita Nyong’o and Michael B. Jordan. The footage wasn’t released (as you would imagine), but we have a detailed description of it right here.

VALERIAN AND THE CITY OF BAD BOX OFFICE NUMBERS

Luc Besson’s return to the silver screen has not had a great opening weekend. The very expensive $180 million Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets opened to just $17 million domestically, with only another $6 million from 16 international markets. Besson has previously said there was no financial risk with the film, as he’d already earned back 96% of the budget with distributor pre-sales. Still, he might want to take a break from his two sequel screenplays for a while until the international numbers are in. Read more here.

ANT-MAN AND THE WASP

Also coming out of San Diego Comic Con is a new poster for Ant-Man and The Wasp. Check it out here.

RAGNAROK

Thor: Ragnarok got a brand new trailer at San Diego Comic Con, which featured more action from Thor, Loki, Valkyrie and The Hulk. From the panel, it has been revealed that the movie takes place four years after Thor: The Dark World, and that Loki has been posing as Odin for all that time. Meanwhile, The Hulk has spent two years on Sakaar (and refused to revert back to Bruce Banner), during which time he’s developed the vocabulary of a two-year old. Meanwhile, The Grandmaster is confirmed as the brother of The Collector, and both are Elders of the Universe, and Clancy Brown is lending his voice to Surtur. Watch the trailer here.

GET READY

And finally in this edition of the Weekend News Roundup, we’ve got our first look at Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One, the big screen adaptation of Ernie Cline’s popular novel. The trailer doesn’t give a lot away about the plot of the movie, but gives us an insight into the visuals – particularly The Stacks and the Zero Gravity bar Parzival visits. It also features the Back to the Future DeLorean, the Iron Giant and a Tron lightcycle. Intrigued? Check out the trailer here.

ARTICLE OF THE WEEKEND

Eric Bay-Andersen explores the aspects of Christopher Nolan’s films that set him apart from his contemporaries in an article you can read here.
