Kevin Feige offers update on Marvel’s Black Panther and Captain Marvel movies

April 12, 2016 by Gary Collinson

With Phase Three of the Marvel Cinematic Universe set to get underway in a few short weeks with the release of Captain America: Civil War, it’s another busy time for the folks at Marvel Studios. Doctor Strange has just wrapped filming, cameras are rolling on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, and Spider-Man and Thor: Ragnarok both set to shoot this summer.

However, as always, Marvel has one eye on the future, and super producer Kevin Feige has provided an update on a couple of the studio’s later Phase Three projects in Black Panther and Captain Marvel.

Speaking to Collider about Black Panther, Feige said that he expects the script to be complete “very soon”: “We have a number of writers on it including Ryan Coogler, who is also directing, he’s working on the draft right now. Between now and the end of the summer there will be more casting announcements. We start filming at the very beginning of next year.”

Black Panther is set for release on February 16th 2018, with Creed’s Ryan Coogler directing Captain America: Civil War’s Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa.

Meanwhile, during the press day for Captain America: Civil War, Feige also touched upon the Captain Marvel movie, stating that: “I think we’ll be announcing a filmmaker in the next month or two, and probably some cast members later in the summer, at the end of the summer. [The story] is about Carol Danvers and that journey to being Captain Marvel.”

There had been a rumour that Marvel had cast Carol Danvers prior to Avengers: Age of Ultron, but it came by way of El Mayimbe, so it was no surprise when it turned out to be bogus. Angelina Jolie has been heavily rumoured for the director’s chair, while a host of actresses have been linked to the lead role (or expressed their interest) including Emily Blunt, Jessica Chastain, Katee Sackhoff, Katheryn Winnick, Charlize Theron, Rebecca Ferguson, and Ronda Rousey.

Captain Marvel is set to hit cinemas on March 8th, 2019.
